SALT Retreat 2019

The high school SALT Leaders attended a half-day retreat recently in preparation for the upcoming school year.

An explanation of the day, courtesy of Charissa Steffensmeier, Campus Ministry.

We started in the adoration chapel with an opening prayer for student leaders and overview of the morning. We then discussed spiritual leadership and ways they can impact younger students as spiritual role models, both formally (by assisting with various ministries) & informally by their daily choices and examples.

Connie Kreikemeier (Executive Director of the Personal & Career Development Center at Midland University & a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach) then joined us for the remainder of the morning to discuss the students’ strengths and how they can leverage them to become strong leaders. They all previously completed the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment, so the first part of Connie’s season focused on deepening each student's understanding of his/her strengths and intentionally developing those strengths. Connie explained  what post-graduate schools and employers want/expect in their applicants and discussed "Strengths Based Leadership.”

The last part of the retreat included breakout sessions. The juniors dove into learning more about their top 5 strengths and how they use them. The seniors discussed some successes they have had in the past year and how their strengths have helped them be successful. They each also set a personal goal for this year and thought about how they can apply their strengths to achieve that goal.

GACC will host quarterly follow-up leadership sessions with the SALT Leaders this year to help them continue to build on their strengths and be intentional in developing their leadership skills.
